In-person and online sessions available across the UK.

At Talking Therapy North, based in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, we understand that maintaining a healthy, fulfilling relationship requires effort, understanding, and effective communication. Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) is designed to help couples strengthen their emotional bonds, improve communication, and navigate life's challenges together.

What is Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)?

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach developed in the 1980s by Dr. Sue Johnson. Grounded in attachment theory, EFCT focuses on identifying and transforming negative patterns of interaction, fostering secure emotional connections between partners. By addressing the underlying emotions that drive conflicts, EFCT helps couples build stronger, more resilient relationships.

Benefits of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

  1. Improved Communication and Understanding

EFCT encourages couples to move beyond surface-level conversations, facilitating deeper, more meaningful dialogues. By expressing emotions openly and listening empathetically, misunderstandings decrease, and mutual understanding grows, creating a foundation of trust and respect.

  2. Increased Emotional Intimacy and Trust

By addressing unmet emotional needs, EFCT helps partners reconnect on a deeper level. As couples become more attuned to each other's feelings, they experience a renewed sense of security and value within the relationship, fostering a stronger bond and greater trust.

  3. Strengthened Relationship Resilience

EFCT equips couples to navigate future challenges together; by fostering emotional connection and improving communication, couples build a relationship capable of withstanding life's ups and downs, leading to long-term stability and satisfaction.

  4. Healing from Past Hurts and Traumas

EFCT provides a safe space for couples to process past hurts and traumas together. By addressing and healing these wounds, couples can move forward with renewed hope and commitment, essential for restoring and enhancing their relationship.

Is EFCT Right for You?

EFCT is beneficial for couples at all stages of their relationship, whether newly together or married for decades. Consider EFCT if you and your partner are:

  • Struggling with emotional disconnection or feelings of distance.

  • Dealing with past traumas affecting your relationship.

Individual sessions: After the first or second session it is typical to arrange an individual appointment for each partner, to help them settle into the therapeutic relationship with the therapist, and so the therapist can get a better understanding of each partner's personal history and context.

  3. Engage in Regular EFCT Sessions: Attend scheduled therapy sessions where you'll work collaboratively with your therapist to explore emotions, identify negative interaction patterns, and develop healthier ways of connecting with each other.

  4. Apply Learned Skills: Between sessions, you'll have the opportunity to practice new communication strategies and emotional responses, reinforcing the progress made during therapy.

  5. Evaluate and Adjust: Periodically, we'll assess your progress and make necessary adjustments to ensure the therapy continues to meet your evolving needs as a couple.
